You come home and find an illegal has cleaned your house and helped themselves to your food. They also moved some of your furnishings to their house. Now you’re really indignant and call the police. The police arrive you explain the problem and they shrug. Giving you this explanation. It’s not our problem you had a sign on the lawn saying Welcome take what you can it’s a free country oh and btw someone can’t break and enter if your door is left WIDE OPEN. That’s an invitation. Maybe you just don’t like this particular individual and now feel they’ve taken advantage of you. That’s a civil matter not a criminal matter.

Group organizes recall effort against Gordon

Anti-illegal-immigration activists will attempt to recall Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon for policies they say are too soft on those who enter the country illegally.
A group calling itself American Citizens United, which includes members of organizations involved in recent anti-illegal-immigrant protests, filed paperwork Wednesday to create a political-action committee.
“Phil Gordon has operated the Mayor’s Office with malfeasance in refusing to execute his sworn oath of office,” the group said in its filing. advertisement
It accused Gordon of “disregarding the will of Phoenix citizens by refusing to allow the Phoenix Police Department to impartially enforce laws against violators of laws on illegal immigration and human smuggling.”
The group will discuss the recall at a press conference this morning at City Hall.
Anna Gaines, the group’s chairwoman, said she and her supporters are angry that Phoenix police do not have unconditional authority to call Immigrations and Customs Enforcement when they encounter a suspected illegal immigrant.
“The main issue is that he has been dividing the community and he has not supported the enforcement of immigration laws,” said Gaines, a member of You Don’t Speak For Me, a group of Hispanic activists opposed to illegal immigration.
Group members said they sought only to remove Gordon from office and had no preference on who should replace him if they were successful.
Gordon was re-elected in September with 77 percent of the vote. An opinion poll this week from Arizona State University showed that of voters familiar with Gordon, 65 percent have a favorable view of him.
“A few on the very fringe want to promote their extremist agenda for Phoenix,” Gordon said in a statement. “That agenda was overwhelmingly rejected just eight months ago, and it will be rejected again.”
To recall the mayor, the activists must gather 23,751 valid signatures. The number of signatures is equal to a quarter of the votes cast in the previous mayoral election.
The group has 120 days from the time they file their formal campaign paperwork, said Mary Jo Slunder, Phoenix elections coordinator.
Paul Charlton, a former U.S. attorney who helped develop revisions to the Phoenix police immigration policy, called the claims in the recall petition “specious and baseless.”
“I think are designed more for publicity than they are to make any kind of substantive point,” Charlton said. “I don’t know that even the individuals who filed this can genuinely believe that the mayor has aided and abetted human-smuggling. That strikes me as disingenuous.”
Keith LeFebvre, a member of the American Freedom Riders motorcycle club, announced the recall effort Tuesday on a radio show hosted by former U.S. Rep. J.D. Hayworth.
The Freedom Riders led counterprotests last year against immigrant advocate Salvador Reza at M.D. Pruitt’s Home Furnishings in Phoenix, where a dispute had erupted over the use of sheriff’s deputies to arrest day laborers accused of trespassing.
This year, the motorcycle club moved its protests to the Macehualli Work Center, Reza’s base of operations.
Gaines, a retired educator who emigrated from Mexico in her youth, said the recall was part of an overall effort to stop an “invasion” of illegal immigrants from Mexico.
“The Mexican government has been wanting to reconquer this area of the Southwest for many years, and now they are obtaining what they wanted to do without a war,” Gaines said. “The mayor is aiding and abetting illegal aliens being here and having rights that they are not entitled to. And Americans are suffering from that.”

When does a crime-suppression effort become racial-profiling?
Opinions on the subject differ as widely as do opinions on illegal immigration.
Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio has said that he does not ask anyone about immigration status without having probable cause to believe a crime has been committed. Probable cause can be used as a shield against claims of racial-profiling, attorneys said.
The subject has attracted renewed scrutiny in recent weeks, as Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon and other elected officials have accused Arpaio of racial-profiling. Gordon and others warn that if Arpaio continues his crime-suppression efforts, the Sheriff’s Office will face racial-profiling lawsuits.
Arpaio’s focus on immigration - he has averaged more than one news release per week on the subject since the start of the year - has won him praise among those who want local elected officials to take a stronger stance against illegal immigrants.
It has also attracted the attention of the American Civil Liberties Union’s Arizona chapter, which says it believes Arpaio’s actions to be unconstitutional.
“It’s been so outrageous and has such obvious bad intent,” said Dan Pochoda, legal director for the ACLU of Arizona. “We will definitely be involved in litigation regarding these activities.”
Pochoda had a run-in with sheriff’s deputies in November, when they arrested him after he parked his car illegally at M.D. Pruitt’s Home Furnishings, where immigration protests were taking place.
Pochoda said Arpaio’s use of a volunteer posse in his immigration crackdown goes beyond the scope of his 287 (g) agreement with Immigrations and Customs Enforcement, under which only specially trained deputies are supposed to make immigration arrests.
The ACLU also noted that ICE’s Web site says the agreements are supposed to be used to “pursue investigations relating to violent crimes, human-smuggling, gang/organized-crime activity, sexual-related offenses, narcotics smuggling and money-laundering.”
Arpaio has been deporting people on the basis of minor traffic violations.
For its part, ICE says the sheriff is within his rights. ICE officials said Friday that they did not believe Arpaio was violating the agreement.
Kristina Campbell, legal director for the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund, said the sheriff’s efforts at crime suppression are a mere pretext for pulling over Latinos.

Are Protesters wrong to hinder Pruitt’s ability to do business ?
The weekly immigration protest circus outside an east Phoenix furniture store needs to come to an end.
The ultimate point behind the dueling demonstrations has been completely lost in the back-and-forth shouting and increasingly bitter political signs appearing each Saturday across the street from M.D. Pruitt’s Home Furnishings. This private business has unfairly been caught in the crossfire, and the potential for violence appears quite real after an immigrant rights protester was arrested Dec. 15 for allegedly shoving a prominent agitator from the other side of the debate.
Blame for a situation that has escalated badly falls squarely on Phoenix resident Salvador Reza and fellow activists who are campaigning for the right of day-laborers, presumed to be illegal immigrants, to loiter in and around Pruitt’s parking lot. A second group of demonstrators is showing up each Saturday only to offer a counter message of strict immigration enforcement.
We are sympathetic to Reza’s larger concern that a rising level of hate in this country is interfering with the public’s ability to rationally discuss workable solutions to our flawed system of immigration and foreign employment. But we are baffled by this strategy of targeting a family-owned furniture store because it acted to protect its private property.
Reza never has disputed that dozens of day-laborers would descend on Pruitt’s parking lot, sometimes creating traffic jams as they waited to be hired and generally discouraging potential customers from coming in. Reza launched the protests after Pruitt’s hired off-duty law enforcement officers to serve as security guards empowered to chase away anyone who didn’t have legitimate business with the store.
The immigrant activists claim they are protesting an immoral slight to Hispanic day-laborers because of their skin color or nationality. But these protesters are the ones who have injected racial bias into the Pruitt’s situation, as we expect the store owners would have reacted the same way if the day-laborers happened to be European, Asian or even Martian.
Such protests would make far more sense if they took place outside of the government offices, businesses or homes of those people with the power to actually affect the outcome of the immigration debate. A small group of immigrant rights protesters moved in this direction Thursday when they marched from Pruitt’s to Phoenix City Hall.
These protesters should continue down that path instead of disrupting the livelihood of a small business that simply wants to provide a comfortable environment for its customers to shop.

Should the advocates for illegals aliens condone blackmailing Pruitt’s Home Furnishings?
A contentious battle over day laborers and illegal immigration has spread from Pruitt’s furniture store in east Phoenix to a day labor hiring site in north Phoenix.
Since Saturday, about a dozen members of anti-illegal immigration groups have been staging protests outside the Macehuali Work Center on 25th Street near Bell Road in retaliation for the weekly protests at Pruitt’s Home Furnishings. The work center is run by Salvador Reza, who for the past two months has organized weekly protests across from Pruitt’s on Thomas Road near 35th Street. Reza is trying to pressure the furniture store from using off-duty sheriff’s deputies to chase away day laborers in the area. He said his group had met on Monday and decided to continue the weekly protests at Pruitt’s this Saturday indefinitely until the owners pull the sheriff’s deputies. Store owners Roger and Michael Sensing could not be reached for comment.
